Iwas given a reading assignment in 5th grade that has remained in my memory to this day. Little did know how much it would teach me in later years.
In the parable, the wind and sun are talking and the wind proclaims that he has much more power than the sun could ever imagine.
The sun just listens.
Finally, the wind challenges the sun to a showdown. As they both look down, a traveler is walking down the road, wearing a heavy coat.
The wind boasts that he is so powerful, he can blow the coat off the traveler. But, the harder he blows, the more the man grabs on to his jacket.
The sun merely shines and his warmth causes the traveler to remove the coat.
So too, it is in our daily lives, with those we warm by our encouragement, while the use of force serves only to create defenses. Now, more than ever, we need each other’s words of reassurance and gestures of benevolence. What better gift to our children, than our examples of empathy, consideration and kindness.
