Stay Safe & Have Fun This Holiday Season
By Alissa Reinhard
T he holidays won’t be the same this year, but there are still several opportunities for you to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year while staying safe and close to home. Here are a few events around the Alamo City (and many on the Northwest side of San Antonio) that you can enjoy with the family this fall and winter season. (Please be sure to check the websites and Facebook pages of the events listed below. Events are subject to cancellation due to the COVID-19
pandemic).
Local Markets. San Antonio is home to
several wonderful farmers markets full of handmade goods, fresh produce, and local flavor. Visit Bandera Market located at 11627 Bandera Road (in the Bandera Pointe Shopping Center behind Pier One) and shop locally grown and handcrafted artisan products produced by small businesses. On November 20 from 4-10 pm, Bandera Market will feature a fall theme with plenty of pumpkins and activities for the family including face painting, balloon twisting and live entertainment. The fun continues into December with Christmas Nights on December 21-23 from 4-10 pm and December 24 from 10 am-3 pm. Santa and his helpers will also be available for family photos.
New to the Northwest side of San Antonio is also the Alamo Ranch Pop Up Market located at 5603 W Loop 1604 N (in front of Target). The market has something for everyone including food, artisan vendors, pet accessories, boutiques, tumblers, wood work, wreaths and more. The market will be open on November 7-8 & 14-15 and December 5-6 & 12-13 from 10 am-5 pm on Saturdays and 11 am-5 pm on Sundays.
If you live on the northwest side, you can also stop by Westover Square Pop Up Market located at 8739 TX 151 (off 151 and Ingram/Potranco next to Willie’s Grill) for another outdoor, pop-up market and enjoy some holiday shopping. Family and pet- friendly. Open on November 7,8, 14, 15, 21 &22andDecember5,6,12,13,19&20from

Drive Thru Christmas Light Experiences.
Over the past eight months, we’ve seen the drive-thru format replace many traditional, face-to-face interactions and events. However, drive-thru Christmas light displays have had the kinks worked out for years, affording all an enjoyable experience from the comfort of your own vehicle. Last year, Lights Alive! made its debut in Alamo Ranch located at 5931 Roft Road (two miles outside Loop 1604 off Culebra Avenue), a 100% computer-animated, musically synchronized light display. After the show, you’re invited to visit the Park & Play Wonderland where you’ll find activities, crafts, photos with Santa, food, and entertainment. Purchase your tickets online in advance to save $5. Lights Alive is open November 20-January 3 (6-10 pm Sunday- Thursday, 6-11 pm Friday-Saturday).
Elf Acres is another local favorite featuring 20 acres of over a half a million Christmas lights and animated displays. After the drive-thru experience, you can also enjoy an illuminated walking area with three mega trees, a synchronized light show, photos with Santa, and yummy funnel cakes, kettle corn, hot chocolate and more! Elf Acres is located one mile outside of Loop 1604 and Potranco Road at 1475 Grosenbacher Road and is open November 13-December 30 (Sunday- Thursday from 6:30-10 pm, Friday-Saturday from 6:30-11 pm).

Annual Christmas Celebrations. This year, Castroville will celebrate its 37th Annual Old Fashion Christmas on December 4 & 5 (Friday from 6-10 pm and Saturday from 9 am-4 pm) in Houston Square in Castroville. The largest arts and crafts show in Medina County, vendors will feature everything from Christmas crafts,
wood work, handmade jewelry, candles, crocheted items, food, and so much more. Visit with Santa, enjoy the entertainment and shopping and let your children’s imagination run wild in the Kid’s Area.
Christmas in God’s Country located in Hondo is also moving forward with their 2020 citywide shopping celebration with vendors dispersed throughout the town in multiple locations. Each location hosting three to six vendors including artisan craft shops, boutiques, homemade beauty supplies, baked and fried foods, restaurants, and other holiday gifts items. This will allow people safely social distance and avoid overcrowding. The Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce will provide maps marked with each shop location with a clear route that makes for a great holiday cruise while you get your Christmas shopping done, all while supporting local businesses! Enjoy Christmas in God’s Country on November 21 from 9 am-6 pm.
Celebrate Christmas in the Cowboy Capital of the World – Bandera, TX – on December 4. From 5-9 pm, enjoy Cowboy Capital Christmas and Shopper’s Jubilee, a citywide Christmas open house for
shoppers, also featuring a live Nativity, caroling, and a Christmas Program at the Bandera County Court House. Then, at dusk, beginning at 6:30 pm, experience Bandera’s first ever Christmas Night Parade down Main Street led by Santa Clause.
The City of Helotes Annual Lighting of the Lights which traditionally features live music, photos with Santa and lighting of the City Christmas Tree has neither been confirmed nor canceled at press time. The city is hopeful that the holiday event will take place and that the MarketPlace at Old Town Helotes will also resume in November and December. However, Helotes is abiding to Bexar County Executive Orders which prohibit outdoor gatherings in excess of 10 people effective through October 28, so no final decision has been made. castroville.com/events-festivals hondochamber.org/cigc banderatx.com/events
